Embrace Tensions & Write Freely

Elephants in the Writing Room is a 5-hour writing workshop that aims to identify your personal and specific tensions with writing and to tease them apart from more concrete techniques that might require development.

Questions answered

who is this workshop for?

Anyone who feels they get any kind of “stuck” with writing. Perhaps you would like to begin to journal, travel journal, or simply wish you felt more comfortable writing emails at work or to family. Maybe you are a grad student, or a professor, who feels the required writing could be easier. If you would like to build or improve your writing  flow, confidence and/or productivity, please register or contact me with any questions.

what will we do in the workshop?

Based upon my teaching and research, we will engage in activities/exercises that help us explore, share, and build upon your early stories/experiences of writing. We will aim to identify your personal and specific tensions/blocks with writing and I will offer perspectives I have built about “the elephants in our writing rooms.” Next, we will share specific excerpts of your writing and begin to tease apart tension (the “elephants”) from technique (specific skills that might help improve your writing, flow, and/or productivity). Together, we will aim to help you begin a new relationship with writing.

Every room I’ve ever been privileged to share as “facilitator/educator” always brims with energy, knowledge, and inspiration before I say a word. As such, I always arrive with some idea of what I would like to invite and share (as described above), but I also leave space for the capacity in the room to help make the work more deeply collaborative.

I recognize that this can be emotional work and Sulya will endeavour to hold safe space for anyone who chooses to join her in these explorations. I understand, however, that Sulya is not trained or certified as a therapist so all participants need to be mindful of which stories are shared with Sulya and the group.
